Reducing Humidity in a Basement in Longmeadow, MA

This homeowner in Longmeadow, MA stopped by our booth at a home show to talk about her basement. She and her husband wanted to eventually finish their basement. However, first, they had some humidity concerns that needed to be addressed first. High humidity causes many problems in a home such as mold (which grows at Relative Humidities [RH] above 75%), rot (which happens above 90% RH) odors, airborne mold spores that aggravate allergies and asthma, increased pests and insects such as termites, and higher air conditioning and heating costs. Result - cold floors above, condensation, mold, rot, odors, drafty, uncomfortable home, higher fuel and electric bills.

We had the perfect solution for this customer. The SaniDry™ Sedona air system is a powerful but energy efficient dehumidification and air filtration system in one unit. Able to remove an incredible 100 pints of water per day and using only 5.9 amps of electricity, the SaniDry™ Sedona drains automatically to a sump or the outside with a condensate pump. It has a powerful 310 cfm blower to circulate the dry air completely around to dry building materials and contents. Mold doesn’t have a chance! An automatic control is easy - set it to 55% RH and forget it - the SaniDry™ Sedona does the rest! And there’s no buckets to empty! Results - Low Relative Humidity, mold stops growing, odors are reduced, lower air conditioning cost, upstairs is dryer.

Insulating a Basement in East Longmeadow, MA

This homeowner in East Longmeadow, MA called us initially asking about mold in her basement. Her child lives in the basement, and she was concerned that the child was exposed to mold. There was a musty odor and high humidity. When our Home Comfort Specialist came out to the home, he identified the source of her concerns.

We had the perfect solution for this customer! We utilized two-part expanding spray foam. We insulated the rim joist (the perimeter of the floor framing system along the exterior of the home). We spray this foam in the rim joist and over the sill plate. Insulating the rim joist in this way seals all air leaks -- filling in the cracks and gaps that are present there. This prevents outside air from getting into the home. The homeowner is now very happy, and she is much more comfortable in her home!

Encapsulating a Crawl Space in East Longmeadow, MA

This homeowner in East Longmeadow, MA reached out to us because she wanted to replace her front door. She had a very old home, and the door had not been replaced in decades. When our Home Comfort Specialist came out to the home, he discussed other home comfort problems they were experiencing. They had been experiencing drafts, and they were hopeful that that could be remedied. Our Home Comfort Specialist went down to the crawl space in the home and found that it was not encapsulated, and it had inefficient insulation that was starting to fall down.

We were able to help this customer! One of the solutions we utilized was our CleanSpace™ crawl space encapsulation system. We first insulated the walls using our SilverGlo™ foam insulation. For the floor, we added a dimpled drainage mat to create a thermal break. We then installed TerraBlock™ floor insulation on top of that. Then, we installed a CleanSpace™ crawl space encapsulation liner over that insulation. We fastened it into both the walls and floor to create a permanent solution for this crawl space. We then added two-part expanding spray foam to the rim joist to ensure that the crawl space was covered. Combined with our other solutions, this homeowner will experience less drafts, warmer floors, lower energy bills, and a much more comfortable home!
